Independent Filmmaking
Learn creative business planning and career strategies for independent filmmakers.
Today, independent filmmakers must compete with the major studios. This one-week workshop is for new and experienced producers, directors, writers, and filmmakers who want to understand the business and deal-making process by which intellectual property is marketed, optioned, sold and distributed. The class covers media and programming trends, markets and sales outlets, product development, pitching, casting, packaging and financing. The class examines various case studies, screens selected films, discusses options and develops a tailored approach to the positioning, marketing, financing or selling of their ideas or film projects. The course covers budgeting, negotiating techniques, preparing for a pitch session, structuring deals, and the legal obstacles filmmakers should avoid. Clips are shown to illustrate product development, options, budgeting, negotiating techniques, pitching, structuring deals, legal aspects, pitching, casting, packaging, financing, distribution and other issues that arise through class discussions. Students come with a film project, a media business design, or a career strategy in mind, and leave the workshop with a customized personal action plan to launch new media businesses, film or video projects.
