Film Cinematography
Learn the fundamentals of motion picture photography and the creative possibilities of various film stocks.
Motion picture film is still the premier motion capture medium available to filmmakers. This one-week workshop is for new filmmakers, cinematographers, photographers and videographers who want to gain experience in shooting film. Through lectures, screenings, demonstrations, fieldwork and critique, the students gain a basic understanding of how to control the motion picture image and the creative possibilities and technical characteristics of various film stocks. Students learn how to conduct film tests, including film speed, emulsion, and latitude tests using incident, spot and color temperature meters, and how to use foot-candles to set lighting ratios. The class uses a combination of 35mm still film, digital cameras, and 16mm film stocks to shoot film tests in the studio and on location. There is ample hands-on fieldwork to help students gain practical experience working with film, filters, diffusion, gels and lighting techniques. The entire film workflow process, from the lab to video transfer and projection, is explored. The class lights scenes, balances color, sets levels of increased and decreased exposure, and discusses these exercises in daily critiques. It is recommended that students take the Basic Lighting and Grip Workshop before this course. Level 1 students must take the Set Etiquette and Safety Crash Course before this workshop.
